Arnaud Maggs: The Dada Portraits

21 Oct - 04 Dec 2010

The Dada Portraits, Hannah Hoch, 2010
For this highly-anticipated exhibition, Arnaud Maggs continues his exploration of taxonomies and systems of identification with a new series of archival inkjet prints. Each print depicts a 19th century French diagrammatic drawing—from a collection that Maggs recently discovered—made for educating carpenters in the more complex areas of their trade. Using a degree of imagination, these elegant and intricate schematics can be viewed as potential constructs of Cubist heads, Constructivist faces, Dada experiments, or even portraits of their major players. By representing and renaming each drawing’s subject, Maggs alters an existing system and imposes his own system in its place.
