Via two new works, Groombridge continues his material and highly conceptual investigations of epistemological concerns. On the main floor, a new sculpture comprised of two flags refers to methods of observation and enlightenment within a space for a moment of clarity. One depicts an astronomer’s chair, a specially-designed piece of furniture with a striking design feature. Its backrest is set at a sharp inclination—a “delirious angle” in order to observe the night skies. The other depicts a grid of four symbols derived from a set of 15th century French playing cards: heart, diamond, spade, and club, all enacted in unconventional colours and repeated in a seemingly random order. On the second floor are four wall works construed as imperfect tools, assembled and used to work towards a total understanding of the observable, measurable world, that inevitably fall short.
