Toronto, ON – opening on Thursday, 23 January from 6 to 9 p.m., and continuing through to 1 March 2014, Susan Hobbs Gallery and Georgia Scherman Projects are pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Sandra Meigs titled The Basement Panoramas.

Victoria visual artist Sandra Meigs recently went underground to study the invisible foundations of buildings: basements and crawl spaces. These overlooked, catch-all spaces are surprisingly intimate, a quality Meigs exploits in her large-scale new work.

The new series includes intensely hued drawings with imagery based on her fascination with the underbelly of domestic architecture. The works suggest parallels with interiority, particularly with the destabilizing self-reflection brought about through the grieving process.

Sandra Meigs was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1953. She holds a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1975) and an MA in Philosophy from Dalhousie University (1980). Her work has been exhibited at the Ydessa Hendeles Foundation, Toronto; the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; The Power Plant, Toronto; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Saidye Bronfman Centre, Montréal; the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, Montréal; Carleton University Art Gallery, Ottawa; and Open Space, Victoria. She has recently participated in group exhibitions at Museum London, London, Ontario; West Vancouver Museum, Vancouver; The Power Plant, Toronto; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver; and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto. She currently lives in Victoria, BC, where she is a professor in the Visual Arts department at the University of Victoria.
