Sandra Meigs: The Giants

15 Sep - 22 Oct 2011

Meigs’ latest solo exhibition features a new body of work that, compared to her “minimalist” 2009 series, The Fold Heads, veers towards the baroque. The Giants started as character studies of tourists that Meigs observed as they meandered through the Inner Harbour in Victoria, British Columbia. These cartoons were enlarged and transposed to panels using soft watercolour pigments in yellow and grey, to which Meigs added glass spheres, linen, mohair, Mylar, coloured gels, and piano wire to create each character. The resulting “combine” paintings are visceral expressions, though for their presentation in the gallery Meigs presents them as prints. Cut around their margins and pinned to the wall, the photographic depictions of these characters flatten and enhance our perception of these fleeting encounters.
