Simple Present, Future Anterior
A 20th Anniversary Show

Organized by Renée van der Avoird

7 February to 16 March 2013

Please join us for the opening on Thursday, February 7th from 7 to 9 p.m.

In keeping with the commemorative spirit of an anniversary, Simple Present, Future Anterior explores ideas of temporality and the nature of memory. Featuring work by all fifteen gallery artists, the exhibition takes its name from two new pieces by Ian Carr-Harris: a pair of handcrafted blackboards with these titular grammatical tenses written on them in perfect cursive. These objects recall conventions of display in pedagogical systems of early childhood, and also express a need to understand and define time.

Simple Present, Future Anterior brings together new and previous works that illustrate and respond to the relationships between past, present and future. Works such as Arnaud Maggs' Scrapbook (2009) and Kevin Yates’ Suitcase (2006) build on memories and past experiences as catalysts for potential futures. Others, such as Brian Groombridge’s 47 degrees 22 minutes 17 seconds N, 8 degrees 32 minutes 37 seconds E (2004) and Althea Thauberger’s Anatomie Artistique (2011) take a more investigational approach by challenging the linearity of time and highlighting its perplexities.
