Working across a diverse range of artistic fields, John Piper (1903–1992) is known for quintessential British landscapes, stained-glass windows and works of abstraction. For the first time, this exhibition highlights the artist’s pivotal role in the development of modern art in Britain, by placing him alongside the likes of Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso, among others.
Piper has a significant connection to the North West, and Liverpool in particular, designing the magnificent glass windows on the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. He also wrote travel articles, designed fabrics and theatre sets, and collaborated with poets and choreographers.
