Slogans for Rotterdam
18 May - 10 July 2016
Author and fourth generation Rotterdammer Elfie Tromp invites fellow Rotterdammers, including artists, thinkers, and writers, but also a barkeeper and students, to create a slogan for the future of Rotterdam. With Slogans for Rotterdam, the city’s current slogan, ‘Make it Happen’, is examined and questioned. Is this the perfect slogan for Rotterdam or can we propose a better motto to the city’s Mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb? Inspired by Douglas Coupland’s Slogans for the 21st Century, ‘Slogans for Rotterdam’ is a growing collection of statements in which he tries to isolate twenty-first-century attitudes from those of the twentieth.
Author Elfie Tromp will regularly sit at her desk in the exhibition to work in-situ, writing her future and new slogans together with her guests. On Wednesday 18 May, Douglas Coupland unveils his first ‘Slogan for Rotterdam’. The new slogans are compiled and presented at TENT as part of the Utopian Dreams exhibition. The slogans are also digitally distributed through TENT’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Elfie Tromp works on her new texts and slogans in TENT from 13.00 until 17.00 hrs on the following days:
