TENT ACADEMY AWARDS 2014
12 July - 17 August 2014
This summer, the TENT Academy Awards 2014 features the best video work from art academies in the Netherlands and this year's academy host country, Finland. The Dutch and Finnish winners shall be chosen from nominated clips, films, documentaries, and animations, and announced during an award show at Cinerama Cinema on July 12th at 20:00. Under the leadership of Juha van 't Zelfde, artistic director of Lighthouse, this year's jury shall choose the winners of places on artists residencies in Helsinki and Rotterdam, and a budget of 2000 euros. After the award show, all nominated works can be seen at TENT from 13 July until 17 August, and will be further screened at Gogbot (Enschede), Impakt (Utrecht), Euroshort Film Festival (Gdansk), and Leeds International Film Festival (Leeds), among others. The TENT Academy Awards exhibition can be seen from 5 to 21 December at Kuva x Tila Gallery and from March to April 2015 at Gallery Augusta, both in Helsinki.
Host Country: Finland
Every year, art students from the host country compete for the TENT Academy Best Foreign Film Award. Germany, the Benelux, Finland, Turkey, and Greece were previous runners in this category. Finland has a rich history in video art and continues to produce internationally known artists such as Mika Taanila (dOCUMENTA 2012, IFFR 2013 at TENT), and internationally exhibiting young artists such as Pilvi Takala and Erkka Nissinen. In 2012, The International Film Festival Rotterdam spotlighted the legendary Finnish filmmaker Mikko Niskanen and director Peter von Bagh, who is co-founder (along with the Kaurismäki- brothers in 1986) and artistic director of the Midnight Sun Festival in Sodankyla. Finland's Aalto University School of Art and Design, was the first academy to offer a practice-based PhD program for audio-visual artists. By creating an exchange between Finnish and Dutch artists, TENT encourages collaborations and crossovers and stimulates international success.
Prize
The winner of the TENT Academy Awards 2014 receives a place on the HIAP artist residency program in Helsinki. The Finnish winner receives a residency at Het Wilde Weten in Rotterdam. Both receive a living/working budget of €1500 for the residency period.
