The Approach

Rezi van Lankveld

24 Mar - 01 May 2005

The Approach is pleased to present the second solo show in the gallery by Rezi van Lankveld.

Van Lankveld builds her paintings by pouring paint on to boards laid on the floor. Allowing the suggestive nature of pools of paint to lead her towards an image, she manipulates the paint to serendipitous effect. Emotionally charged figures emerge from the processes of swirled marbled paint as well as modulated and strong brushstrokes. Individuals, couples and groups are fused in ambiguous embraces and gatherings, intimated by limbs, bodies, heads and tails that are seductively ambiguous. Despite the un-predictable process, certain images re-occur. Mysterious baroque female figures are the predominant inhabitants of this realm, but whether mourning or menacing, these phantasms are slippery to pin down. Van Lankveld’s paintings play with the interior tradition of Dutch space against a sombre lit image. As you peer into the darkness intimate scenarios unfold and fold in again to the abstract pleasure of the paint.
