CONSTANTLY EXPANDING, the first exhibition of Jose Alvarez's work in Miami opens at The Moore Space on Saturday, April 12, 2008 from 7 - 10pm. This Fort Lauderdale and New Yorkbased artist produces paintings, drawings, collages, videos; and he is internationally known for his performances in which he "channeled" the 2000-year-old spirit of the shaman Carlos, in front of live audiences and in world-wide media broadcasts in the United States, China, Australia, Europe, and South America.
This exhibition follows “The Visitors”, his recent solo exhibition at The Kitchen in New York, in which the artist presented work in all media continuing his exploration of the complex intersection of mysticism, science, spirituality, and the construction of belief systems. Alvarez’s draws from a variety of sources including his long standing dialogue with James Randi, the famous magician and renowned challenger of the paranormal; recent visits to Houston's NASA Space Flight Center; and to Australia's Parkes Observatory telescope. The artist’s work has consistently explored the unfolding of psychic hoaxes, the perceived supernatural energy of
charmed objects, and the mysterious quests underlying space exploration and how they connect to the strong human desire for knowledge and transformation.
For The Moore Space, Jose Alvarez is unveiling a brand new animation, digital murals and exuberant collages that extend his fascination with unorthodox materials, ritual, magic, allegory, and the concept of the sublime as an expression of transcendence. The artist will also show the final and closing chapter of his previous performances done in collaboration with James Randi inside the Australia's Parkes Observatory Telescope.
Jose Alvarez was born in 1968 in New York and attended the School of Visual arts. He participated in the 2002 Whitney Biennial at The Whitney Museum Of American Art, and has also exhibited at Deitch Projects, New York; Ratio 3, San Francisco; Yerba Buena Center For The Arts, San Francisco; Western Projects, Los Angeles; Gavlak, West Palm Beach; and he will be included at the upcoming traveling exhibition Psychedelic, Optical And Visionary Art Since The 1960's curated by David Rubin for The San Antonio Museum Of Art.
The Moore Space is dedicated to presenting international contemporary art forms. It achieves this through an experimental program of cross-disciplinary exhibitions, performances, artists and curators residencies, and public programs which reflect the state of contemporary art today: new forms, new voices and new thought.
