BENJAMIN VERDONCK
"On The Way To Work"

October 22 - November 28, 2009

Benjamin Verdonck (1972) is an actor, writer, performing artist and theatre producer working not only in the regular theatre (Nine Finger, Global Anatomy), the exposition hall (Collection in Wiels, Werk/Some Work in LLS 387) but in public space as well.

The latter comprises such projects as Bara/ke (for two weeks Verdonck is living in a hut on a seven metre high post, where he continuously addresses pedestrians passing by in the street) and hirondelle/dooi vogeltje/the great swallow (a seven day stay in a bird’s nest at thirty-two metres against a building in Brussels, repeated in Birmingham and Rotterdam as well). Between the 3rd January 2009 and the 2nd January 2010 the action cycle CALENDAR will be unfolding in Antwerp (Toneelhuis, KVS, Antwerp Open, Campo). For an entire year he will make working in public space his artistic focus. In 2010 this project will receive a stand-alone reflection in the white cube of the M HKA (CALENDAR / WHITE) and the black box of the theatre hall (CALENDAR / BLACK). From the 22nd October up to and including the 28th November Benjamin Verdonck will be presenting the exhibition ON THE WAY TO WORK at the Tim Van Laere Gallery including among others scale-models, photos and constructions which resulted from actions in public space or document them. In addition he is showcasing several houses which are part of a never ending work: another city; an imaginary city originally consisting of plans that were never executed but which have by now gone on to lead a life of their own.
