Galerie Wilma Tolksdorf will open the fall season in Berlin with Ann-Kristin Hamm. Hamm, a graduate of Düsseldorf's Kunstakademie, impresses the viewer with large paintings with startling colours that find a way beyond the usual classifications of figurative and abstract painting. Already as a student of Dieter Krieg and Albert Oehlen, she developed her very own visual language which she has been perfecting ever since.
In her latest works, Ann-Kristin Hamm continues the play with shapes and colours. Her paintings develop from abstract lines and colour fields that come together as figures and then dissolve again. Floral elements may be associated with triviality, but the figures never really become concrete. With her lines, arranged in semi-circles, they are reminiscent of fans and butterflies. Ann-Kristin Hamm combines the seemingly randomly arranged patterns with visual elements of her own, creating a vibrating dynamism. This process results in many different overlapping visual layers. The perceptible below and above produces a diffuse spatiality. Areas are painted over, and we can only sense the layers below. The individual parts are composed into a whole like a collage, playfully overcoming apparent opposites like spatiality and two-dimensionality, abundance and emptiness, delicate and strong colours, explosive movement and calm.
Since 2007, Ann-Kristin Hamm has also been painting on records and their covers. She takes her method of using collage techniques one step further here by letting parts of the motifs on the covers stand, and painting over the rest.
