Galerie Wilma Tolksdorf is pleased to present new works by Sebastian Gerstengarbe. The artist dedicates his artistic practice to the close observation of his immediate environment. These are excerpts from the artist’s everyday life. One sees a book, a laptop, the workplace at the table, a daily newspaper, packaging, crinkled photos and parts of the studio. Due to Sebastian Gerstengarbe’s reduction of what is essential to him, the selected objects appear in an unfamiliar context. Thus, an individual image space is created which highlights the diversity of ordinary objects and their forms.

The personal interest of the artist is illustrated by the selection of certain items of information sources and media. Books, magazines, newspaper articles, records or CDs are frequently used motifs in Sebastian Gerstengarbe's work. Another subject in his art is the traditional medium of drawing itself, both his own drawings and those of old masters. Furthermore, we find self-reflective elements in his works, such as the presence of the artist’s shadow as well as his drawing hand.

Due to filigree strokes and lines, fine hatching and points, Sebastian Gerstengarbe transfers his point of view into delicate drawings which are typical for him. In his increasingly larger formats, the artist uses, besides pencil, also oil and crayon more frequently; yet he is able to preserve the lightness and transparency of his pencil drawings.

Even though the drawings offer a legibility that appears easily accessible, the artist challenges and questions our viewing habits through the use of unusual clippings and image detail. The gentle structures of the drawings unfold a fine and unique aesthetic of its own.

Sebastian Gerstengarbe (*1973) studied Painting and Graphic Art at Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Dresden and Graphic Art at Hochschule für Kunst und Design, Halle. Among others, he has received the “Art Price Energy” by Vattenfall Europe and a travel grant for New York awarded by the Art Foundation Saxony-Anhalt.
