Tomio Koyama Gallery is pleased to announce that the exhibition of Kishio Suga starts from February 18 to March 11.
Kishio Suga was born in 1944 in Morioka, Iwate prefecture. He graduated from Tama Art University. He won Shell art prize while attending the university in 1967. In a recent large-scale solo exhibitions are <Uncertain Void : Installation by Suga Kishio> (Iwate Museum of Art, 2005), <Kishio Suga---Stance>(Yokohama Museum of Art, 1999), and <Kishio Suga Exhibition>(tour exhibition starts from Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Itami City Museum of Art, Kanagawa Prefecture Gallery, Chiba City Museum of Art, 1997). He has been participating many exhibitions during 40years of his career from the first solo exhibition in 1968 to present. His activity is expanded internationally, he participated the 38th Venice Biennale in 1978 (Japanese Commissioner: Yusuke Nakahara). Since then he exhibited in Italy, Korea, and also participated several international Biennale.
Kishio Suga is one of the artist from "Mono-ha" which is stormed Japanese art movement between 1970s and 1980s. After he learned from Yoshishige Saito at university, he used such as wood, stone, metal fragment, and glass sheet as materials of his artworks, and placed them in the exhibition space. "Thing" and "body", "thing" and "space", "center" and "surrounding"- these "thing" he strips away preexisting concepts related the materials.
"There is no such thing as 'form' until it is cognized from the infinite phenomena around us. Form is created by our consciousness which selects according to our needs or abilities. Everything is interdependent without definition, until we become aware of one aspect; then 'form' emerges for the first time." (Kishio Suga)
It does not bias to the theory, his artwork always lies between the body and artwork itself in the production process. The conception of ヤartwork must be seen like thisユ is denied and he plays the most radical approach to his artwork. After 1990s, his thought has been introducing in exhibitions not only in Japan but all over the world. In 1995, his artwork circulated to the exhibition of <Matter and Perception 1970: Mono-ha and the Search for Fundamentals> at The Museum of Fine Arts Gifu. Also the exhibition of <Reconsidering Mono-ha> at The National Museum of Art, Osaka, <Japan des Avant Gardes > at Centre National d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou, and <Japanese Art After 1945: Scream Against the Sky> Yokohama Museum of Art in 1994 and it went to Guggenheim Museum Soho.
The exhibition this time at Tomio Koyama Gallery shows the video work which is in his performance called <Activation>. Also there is the photography work of his outdoor performance which looks back on the starting point of him. Add to these, three new sculptures are exhibited. Suga himself will do the performance called <Activation> at opening party (February 18, 16:00).
