Tomio Koyama Gallery is pleased to present a new photography exhibition by a Tokyo based artist Mamoru TSUKADA.
Mamoru Tsukada was born in Nagano prefecture in 1962. After studying photography in the U.S, he is currently based in Tokyo.
This is his second one-man show after "THE FACT THAT WE ARE COMPELLED TO LOOK OUT BEYOND OUR SENSIBLE REPRESENTATIONS" held at Tomio Koyama Gallery in 2003.
He started his career as a photographer taking pictures of blind people. People who are blind build visual experience through senses other than sight and the image they create in their brain deviates from space and time in reality, because of their blindness. Tsukada gets inspiration from working with them pursuing possibilities of images of his works. He continues exploring how the image functions, by making photographs that deviate from reality to arouse the unconsciousness.
The series "IDENTICAL TWINS" made in 2003 regards war as a way of communication. Using images of Japanese soldiers from World War II and twins representing the young generation of today, he tries to change the viewer's time axes: past, encountering with the past, observing present time and institution for the future. These works are done under the multi-layered structures such as the invisibility of the world, the relation between photography as a medium and himself, and simulation that is one of the features in photography.
Tsukada's works, where inspiration taken from encountering subjects and well- considered ideas meet, imply many words behind them. They reach to the unconsciousness of viewers through the "gap" between photography as the transparent medium and difference human beings create.
In the exhibition "Site Graphics" held in Kawasaki City Museum in 2004, he exhibited a series called "ACEPHALE" showing unusual people standing in a forest, creepy masks and mysterious traces. In the exhibition "Zone- poetic moment" held at Tokyo Wonder Site in Ochanomizu, a series called "CHANNELING", which shows portraits of people who are somewhat under images of death were also exhibited.
In this exhibition "Specter", eight new works will be exhibited.
Tsukada said, "The new works 'SPECTER' have been created using a humorous and physical way putting masks over a camera lens. I use this technique in order to create an image of the inside and outside of masks at same time, in two dimensions. Front is back and back is front. This work is to reveal the 'optic nerve' rather than sight, which reflects and challenges how blind people recognize the world. As a continued ritual after 'ACEPHALE' (2004) and 'CHANNELING' (2005), the 'SPECTER' is a physical challenge for the artist who is a mediator."
We hope you enjoy "SPECTER".
