CARLOS REYES
Cinnamon + sidewalks, seeps < sleeps
18 January - 22 February 2015
Marked with the time stamp “2015,” an eleven-inch platform elevates the gallery floor. Three birch boxes – stained black, laser etched and dotted with a kernel of powder printed popcorn – dip into the platform’s surrounding trench. Each hides a hammer’s head behind a mirror. A galvanized necklace strung with avocado pits encircles the platform; buds of laser toner held fast by rare earth magnets define its ends. Beside an etched photogram of a landscape, the blackened tips of intertwined hand tools smudge the wall.
Special thanks to Artur Kotarba and Steve K. Chiu who have provided the sketches for ‘Cinnamon + sidewalks, seeps < sleeps’ documentation, which is featured at tomorrowgallery.info.
Carlos Reyes received his M.F.A. from NYU in 2011, and returned to NYU as a visiting scholar in 2013. Recent exhibitions include ‘Musique Concrète’ at Michael Thibault, Los Angeles, ‘Dylan’s lost it maybe’ at Croy Nielsen, Berlin (2014), ‘Changing Table’ at Kate Werble, NYC (2014),’Coupling’ at Taylor Macklin Gallery, Zurich (2014), ‘Santal 26 / 33’ at Grand Century, NYC (2014), ‘L’advance, L’advance, L’advance’ with Eli Ping at 247365 Brooklyn, New York (2014), ‘Bloomington: Mall of America, North side food court, across from Burger King & the bank of payphones that don’t take incoming calls’ at Bortolami Gallery, NYC (2014).
