Two Street Children Projects: Cut Short and Shari’a

A Photography Exhibition by Hisham Labib and Exhibition of Children’s Paintings
Opening Reception April 1 at 7 PM
Date April 1 - 29 April

The second exhibition The Townhouse Gallery ever showed was a selection of powerful, astoundingly accomplished, paintings by street children - a project that grabbed the public's attention and subsequently toured within Egypt, raising the profile of this issue. Eight years on the NGO working with this particular group has been disbanded, but what has changed regarding the street children issue?
Photographer Hisham Labib has recently spent time with another group of street children, capturing their extraordinary lives through his lens. The resulting images are affecting to say the least and in a different way as powerful as the children’s own pictures. Rough, harsh and beautiful, they narrate the story of his encounter with Tata, Islam, Abir, Mariam and Karim.
On April 1st we will open two exhibitions at the gallery that brings together both these projects and launches a book of the children's images. Hisham’s photographs entitled Cut Short will be exhibited in the first floor gallery and the children’s paintings will be enlarged and exhibited in our annex as Shari’a. The aim is to continue raising awareness, challenge misconceptions on the nature and situation of this social issue and to act as a forum for debate.
