IN PRINT
5 - 22 February 2012

In an economic climate marked by the demise of the publishing house and bookstore, artists, writers, and designers are self-producing low-budget, limited editions of experimental publications, and distributing them through their personal networks. “In Print” is a project that looks at some of these alternative approaches to the printed page, inviting three Cairo-based, conceptually diverse DIY initiatives ( Zine El-Arab , TokTok , and Cairobserver ) to set up temporary printing bureaus in Townhouse’s First Floor Gallery. “In Print” begins on Sunday, February 5, with the launch of the second issue of Zine el-Arab. It continues for three weeks with the practitioners behind each of these uncensored, Arabic-language projects (Ganzeer, Mohamed Shennawy, and Mohamed Elshahed, respectively) working on their publications in the gallery space, meeting with their collaborators, and discussing their initiatives with the general public. A fourth room in the gallery will serve as a reading room where visitors can continue these cross-disciplinary discussions over a cup of coffee, and consult a curated selection of publications. Through these interactions and discussions, “In Print” hopes to create a platform for the further development of an independent, artist-driven publishing scene in Cairo. On February 19 the participants will present the development of their projects during this 3 week period in an open discussion with the public.
