YORGOS SAPOUNTZIS
20 May - 8 July 2012
Yorgos Sapountzis (b. 1976 in Athens, Greece) displays public urban spaces from a new perspective by confronting the present with its own past. In his work he explores those urban spaces which are occupied by petrified signs of representation and power. Whether they are meeting places, historic monuments or streets lined with houses, Sapountzis updates the meaning of these spaces using interventions, performances, sculptures and videos that use the language of contemporary design and enter into a dialog with the narration of history. Like a parasite, he seems to find his way into almost completely deserted spaces at night to appropriate the space in his own particular way. In a solo presentation at the Ursula Blickle Stiftung, he will provide an overview of earlier video and performance works for the first time and also develop a new installation for the location. A catalog on the exhibition is being published in cooperation with Westfälischer Kunstverein, where Yorgos Sapountzis will present a continuation of the project in summer.
