The first S M L XL Hellenic Design exhibition took place at Vamiali’s gallery from 1 December 2011 until 7 January 2012. The exhibition features the work of 21 Greek designers who experimented and created innovative utilitarian objects, mostly special commissions, in limited editions and aims to highlight the creative game behind creativity and design. A multitude of manufacturers and producers across Greece realise the designers’ ideas. The creative process was not the result of corporate or industrial planning, the objects did not materialise through the mobilisation of a diverse and impersonal taskforce; instead, designers reacted spontaneously to their audience’s needs. Projects were conceived and completed through transparent and ethical processes. Collaborative effort lied at the heart of the exhibition which makes visitors aware of the links between aesthetic value, utility, scale of production and final price; the latter is the gauge by which objects were classified into the S M L XL ranges. Parallel to that, the exhibition tries to promote the dynamics of Greek originality along with the effort of the people involved professionally in the field of product design, by taking the risk in these recent crucial times. The exhibition attempts to pose questions that today seem more critical than ever.
Such as: -The relationship among functionality, aesthetics and even the market value of an object. -The relationship among the prototype design, prduction cost and the quantity.
On the other hand S M L XL Hellenic Design exhibition aims to become the catalyst for a wide and open discussion regarding the issue of product design in Greece. The purpose and key idea of the exhibition is to help the viewers to understand the relation among the price, the functionality, the form, the design, the cost, differentiated in the 4 categories S M L XL (Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large).
Conceived and organized by Hellenic Art & Design, Kallirroy Spyridonos.
