GUNTHER FORG
Painting Sculpture Cansons

Dear friends of the gallery, We would like to draw your attention to our upcoming exhibition „Painting Sculpture Cansons” by Gunther Forg. Very early in his career Gunther Forg (born in 1952) was exhibited in the most important museums of the world. Galerie Vera Munro supports him and his work for 26 years. Since the beginning of his artistic career at Vera Munro many of his major works were exhibited. For his first exhibition in 1986 at the gallery, he produced one of his first wall paintings, which was published in the exhibition catalog entitled “Sorting”. In his upcoming exhibition Gunther Forg shows paper works, sculptures and never exhibited canvases. Forg’s broad oeuvre oscillates between different media, which he puts together in respect of each other and whose terminology he questions. His focus ranges from painting, wall painting, watercolor, drawing, printmaking, photography to sculpture. He analyses and questions modernity. Forg’s working method is based on contextuality which brings about the change of disciplines, fields of study and levels of expression in his work. The relation between space (architecture) and program (identity) of an exhibition site are important features that serve Forg to stage his shows. For him the composition of space and object are equivalent and have a complementary role. “It’s simple”, he has expressed in 1982, “you do something. You look at a space and then you think about solutions. There are hundreds of possibilities to do something in a space and one of those will be picked.” Gunther Forg had significant worldwide museum exhibitions in Europe and Overseas such as at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, at the Museum van Hedendaagse Gent, at the Museum der Bildenden Kunste Leipzig, at the Kunstverein Munchen, at the Fridericianum Kassel, at the Kunsthaus Bregenz, at Kunstverein Hannover, at Reina Sofia Madrid, at the Museum Haus Lange Krefeld and so on. He was featured in numerous group exhibitions such as Documenta IX, Metropolis, Bilderstreit, Von hier aus etc. His works are part of major international museums and collections. He is one of the most important painters of his generation. Forg has a professorship at the Art Academy Munich. He lives and works in Germany.
