Dani Jakob & Sebastian Hammwoehner

26 Nov - 22 Dec 2005

Vilma Gold is pleased to present the first UK solo exhibition by Dani Jakob & Sebastian Hammwoehner. The exhibition comprises of a collaborative installation based on the Pythagorean divergence between mathematical rationality and irrational mysticism.

The combination of mathematics and theology began with Pythagoras c. 580-500 BC. The Pythagorean view of the universe rests on the belief that Natural number was the explanatory key to the qualities of mankind and matter.

Pythagoras deduced that all things in the universe have a numerical attribute that can be uniquely described. For example: 1 (unity) is the generator of numbers, the number of reason. 2 (diversity, opinion) is the first true female number. 3 (harmony = unity + diversity) is the first true male number. 5 (marriage) = first female + first male. 6 (creation) = first female + first male + 1. and son until you 10 (universe) tetractys. For Pythagoras the holiest of numbers was the number 10 or the tectractys. In addition the personalities the first four numbers had a also had special significance in that their sum amounts for all the possible dimensions: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 (universe).

Jakob & Hammwoehners' installation refers to the exhibition space and its geometry - a space that can be seen in terms of both abstraction and geometric neutrality. Jakob & Hammwoehners' works trace this rational abstraction and geometry through its own irrational history and the mystic world of symbols. Jakob & Hammwoehners' installation can be seen as an attempt to celebrate the mystical origins of the white gallery space by transforming it into a circus-like imaginary world. Using simple materials such as sand, paper, wood and felt the installation creates a symbolic patchwork world where memories and fictions collide.
