ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE: RUTH EWAN AND LUCY CASH
15 December 2012 - 8 March 2013
Artists Ruth Ewan and Lucy Cash collaborated with students from local secondary schools during the academic year 2011/12 to delve into the hidden histories and culture of their school environments.
Ruth Ewan’s new book, Exercises in Optimism, draws on Clapton Girls’ Academy’s progressive educational history. The result is a collection of drawings by students, offering a snapshot of how young people growing up in east London today see the future role of women in society.
Lucy Cash’s installation is the result of the students’ investigation into the local neighbourhood, culminating in large-scale portraits of their eyes fly-posted on hoardings outside the school. Alongside the photos, three moving image works explore connections between looking, belonging and place.
