A glass gallery in a museum lobby provided the stage for a group of dancers performing gestures drawn from rugby, romance and corporate meetings. On False Tears and Outsourcing was created by Cally Spooner (b. 1983, UK) in 2015. Colliding fake sentiment with 21st-century labour practices, its title holds the key to Spooner’s absurdist replays of political, economic and media rhetoric. Her structuralist films, performances and writings expose the contrivance behind the seamless productions of a contemporary image culture. Comedic and dystopian, her scripts snip and tuck subjectivity into the abstract phrases of a high performance economy.
As the 2016 Whitechapel Gallery Writer in Residence Spooner embarked on a novel – from which she sporadically uploads dialogues, plots, requests for advice onto the Whitechapel website – and has now been translated into a sound piece and an interview. Beginnings and ends are unclear, actions are deferred: ‘Let’s have a baby! No, wait. Let’s grab a clipboard!’
