IGOR MAKAREVICH
The Erastovs Home
installation
November 3 thru November 28, 2010
This installation - based on the photographs shot in the 1960-70ies - recreates the dull atmosphere of Brezhnev's epoch. It is both the document of emigration of Erastovs family (the artist's close friends) and the story of despair, anxiety, hope and pursuit of freedom.
The long panoramic photographs appeared because the artist first shot the scenes of departure of the Erastovs in the airport, and then unwillngly rewinded the film and shot the interiors of the Erastovs abandoned home onto the same film. Having processed the film then in 1975, Makarevich desperately thought he had destroyed very important airport scene. 35 years later he reviewed the negative and realised that the superimposed images reveal more than he expected about the severe yet nostalgic life.
The photographs in the albums (hung from the walls) were printed from the negatives shot by the Eratovs children (found by the artist in their abandoned home). The albums are hand-made.
