4 Dec 2010 - 23 Jan 2011
Nina Beier is a London- and Berlin-based artist who utilizes a range of media including photography, video, performance and sculpture. Her work focuses on shared actions, ideals, experiences and histories that bind people together in close relationships, temporary groups or abstract communities. The work often takes the form of simple instructions, at once precise and open to interpretation, that aim to subtly shift the ways in which viewers intuitively engage with each other within a specific context. By staging actions and introducing shifts in the existing context and material, Beier challenges viewers to reflect upon aspects of traditional viewing spaces, common audience behaviors and institutional conventions.
For YBCA Beier will create a new body of work entitled Agents of Change which will include 'Stage Reading — Reading the Reader,' a scripted dialogue based on a conversation between Beier and a retired Bay Area activist/artist that will be performed by two actors at various times throughout the exhibition. The performance will feature the actors casually sitting on the edge of a stage inside the exhibition space, who alternate between performing the script and improvisation, and who function as an installation within the gallery space.
