PAUSE :: ICONS OF ATTENTION
Jan 23–Mar 7, 2010
YBCA presents Kamau Patton, a Bay Area-based video and performance artist, whose installation Icons of Attention experiments with a new type of radio created by the local art community. Modeled after 1930s science fiction broadcasts and underground music shows, the installation experiments with radio’s potential to bring the distant, fantastic, or confusing into vivid, close proximity for listeners. The artist invites local performance art personalities, musicians and intellectuals to explore a dynamic workshop/studio environment and improvise with installed objects and sounds. Patton and invited guests develop narratives as well as sound scripts and ask gallery visitors to perform various tasks which include voice dramatizations, sampling and special effects. A low-power radio transmitter at YBCA allows listeners within a two-mile radius to tune in to the installation.
Icons of Attention is part of YBCA Exhibition series PAUSE :: Practice and Exchange.
Curator: Julio Cesar Morales, Adjunct Curator of Visual Arts at YBCA.
