An Old Subject Made Older
Or if you will, three old subjects: Food, Money, Work.
In this show of paintings on wooden panels, Margarete Hahner presents her argument that prostitution is not the oldest profession. Perhaps cooking dinner is.
In the spirit of a fabulist, Hahner likes going into the forest and overturning the old logs there. Underneath these decaying subjects, she finds signs of new life. She pokes them. Hahner here paints the commonplace. An apple. Cash. A pot. A bowl of soup. They are rendered with a sensation of wonder coupled with the inexplicable.
Look Mommy. They are sometimes garnished with uneasiness and dread.
The work in "An Old Subject Made Older" is not so much Brothers Grimm creations, but rather the resulting interpretation of the stories by someone hearing them for the first time. Hahner's bowl of soup is familiar, but the ladle looks menacing. By imbuing the ordinary with re-figured elements, the show's subject groupings (food, money, work) demonstrate new signs of life.The original sensation of familiarity is immediately chased by displacement.
The old-old becomes the old-new.
