Nardo Brudet - Brainfood
26 August - 27 September 2006

Nardo Brudet was acclaimed Overall Winner of the 2005 Photo Academy Award* for his Brainfood series. This collection of 34 polaroids showing the emotions, ideas, desires and fears that dominate his perspective on life and society, was Brudet’s final exam project. In effect the series is a self portrait of the photographer.

Brudet reacts directly with impulsive, emotional images to other people, to society, to the world. In Brainfood Brudet attempts to capture the pure essence of photography (the polaroids have not been digitally manipulated), and the essential quality of his own emotions and experiences.

The rough, unpolished appearance of the photos also reflects the photographer’s own attitude to life: the marks and scratches result from the carelessness and impatience of his enthusiasm. Brudet deliberately uses double exposure and other techniques (while taking photos) to inject a certain unpredictability into the development of the series. As fragments of thought, the photos are full of symbolism of life, death and society.

Nardo Brudet (b. 1969, Amsterdam) graduated in 2004 with first class honours at Fotoacademie Amsterdam with his series Brainfood. Before studying photography Brudet worked for three years as a singer in a funk band, a guard at Bijlmerbajes prison and proprietor of a snack bar.

*De Photo Academy is a professional prize awarded to final-year photography students and graduates of colleges and academies in the Netherlands and Belgium.
