YISHAI JUSIDMAN
"Modelos, Stills, Abstracciones"

OMR is pleased to present Yishai Judisman solo show Models, Stills and Abstractions (2003-2006).
Since the late Eighties, Jusidman’s work has developed in discreet series dealing with themes specific to contemporary painting. Jusidman argues that the evolution of painting in the XX century was underpinned by dichotomies that artificially supported the implausibility of naturalism. Jusidman has been interested in undermining these dichotomies through his practice as a painter. For instance, Clowns (1991-92) redefined the minimalist’s obsessions with the physical objectivity of pigment and surface; Sumo (1994-97) recalibrated modernist abstract formalism; and En/treat/ment (1998) reformulated the psychological tensions in paintings without resorting to the gestural brushstroke.
Jusidman again approaches abstraction as trigger in the series of recent years, now somewhat immersing himself in the painterly ludic dimension, yet still within the analytical framework that has characterized the rest of his production.
The series Models brings together paintings on rugs that incorporate texts taken from “model letters” in epistolary manuals of the XVII, XVIII and XIX centuries. Jusidman has made a meticulous selection of texts such that their content (conciliatory, threatening, of gratitude, etc) echo the strategies of XX century abstract painting, and activating complicities and flirtations among the epistolary and the pictorial, and between the literary and the literal.
Stills is a series of small still-life paintings capturing ephemeral moments in the artist’s studio. Tools and utensils —such as paintbrushes, cleaning cloths, cans and buckets— are depicted as that which already exists in paint. The pictorial space of Stills, which includes vignettes from his previous paintings, is built upon stains, strokes, drippings, and spills. Here Action Painting and its objectivist ambitions have a rendezvous with good-old naturalist painting.
The digital prints on photographic paper in the Abstractions series generate painting and photographic hybrids. Starting with the images of the paintings in Models, Jusidman has had the text digitally removed and meticulously re-painted. The resultant “paintings”, while existing exclusively in the virtual realm, efficiently articulate as painterly abstractions.
As an interlinked whole, the series Models, Stills and Abstractions replay the complex visual, material, referential, metaphorical, historical, technical and technological webs that turn painting into an Art.
The show will remain open to public through the 8th of August 2006
