KAGISO PAT MAUTLOA
"Other Presences"
August 21 - September 13
The Goodman Gallery is pleased to announce an exciting exhibition of new works by Kagiso Pat Mautloa, entitled Other Presences. This exhibition follows Mautloa’s two month residency at Nirox.
Kagiso Pat Mautloa’s new body of work comprises a series of large paintings, which explore the construction of time and space, using various media collaged and placed strategically in painterly forms. Other Presences is a reaction to the stimuli, space and environment that surround the artist. Mautloa’s work incorporates a belief that the energy that encircles a person and space is determined by environmental conditions. His world is depicted in terms the energy between painted form, found object, photograph and installation, creating relations between space in his work and life.
Other Presences hinges around found and recycled objects, used as a pallet on which Mautloa has created his paintings. The metaphorical associations that exist in his work, are created through the use of texture and found objects. Found objects combined with various raw materials, are used to create abstract landscapes and define Mautloa’s environment. Constantly aware of his surrounding environment and the forms that exist within it, Mautloa sometimes takes years to complete a single work. These paintings capture pieces of Johannesburg city life and townships, and mine scenes such as mine shafts, forming a portrait of the South African landscape. Other Presences narrates Mautloa’s South African context and people whose lives are intertwined within this context.
