I am fascinated by places like the Todai-ji temple in Nara with its gigantic Buddha, or by others in India with colossal elephants that had to be sculpted before the building itself was erected around them.
On this occasion, I am presenting one single piece on the upper floor of Galería Helga de Alvear.
It has been polished and altered on successive occasions until finding the appropriate proportion in its relationship with the spectator and the gaze. Its dimensions, weight and physicity are of paramount importance. The material presence of the piece imbues the space with power and energy. It is executed in a glossy material and die-cast like a spinning top.
Its proportions might suggest a large tree opening up towards the ceiling or a huge hourglass. I returned from Rome obsessed with the shape of the hourglass. On my last day there, I bought a tiny one, measuring one minute only, in a wonderful shop in Trastevere called Polvere di Tempo. Now I always keep it with me.
Since then, this shape has haunted me. It is voluptuous and fragile; stylised and symmetric. A large pedestal evoking and sustaining the meaning of what it supports; a metaphor of time, a pedestal-sculpture, a sculpture-pedestal. At once a totem, flower, genesis, explosion, perfume bottle, bed, nest, idol......
An intense symbol.
