YOUNG AT HEART
project by Alexandre Melo

Opening: Thursday 20th September 2007, 8 pm.

One of the defining cultural changes of the second half of the 20th century was the emergence of youth as an artistic, ideological and political agent in modern societies. Since then, cultures, sub-cultures and urban tribes have gradually gained more power and visibility, until now playing a critical role in the evolution of public taste in many areas of everyday life, with a consequent knock-on economic effect.
Indeed, young people comprise one of the fastest growing markets, particularly in certain cultural industries, like music (with the pop revolution), cinema (the return of sagas and childhood heroes), television (the so-called MTV Generation) or computers (videogames), which progressively ground their commercial strategies in expectations related with what an ever-younger audience want.
Questions on this issue travel the spectrum between what young people want to what is expected from young people.
A hypothesis of the embodiment of an ideal of beauty? A store of value for the practice of a high-intensity sexual desire? A brainstorm for the production of new marvels of creative imagination? New models for an exemplary citizen or a capital of hope for the advent of untamed rebelliousness?
