Photographer Jane Bown has worked for the Observer for an extraordinary (and unrivalled) 65 years, making unforgettable images of hundreds of subjects – from Jayne Mansfield to the Queen, from John Lennon to Orson Welles. Using basic equipment and often relying on available light, she has honed a deceptively simple technique to produce her highly distinctive and indeed iconic photographs.

This film by Luke Dodd and Michael Whyte respectfully celebrates the great artist by focusing on her personal history, which hitherto she has always kept very private. Mixing interview footage with beautifully presented examples of her work, the directors take us back to her sad and disrupted childhood, explaining – often by subtle implication – how it influenced her innovative approach to portraiture.
