Brave New World

05.09. – 19.10.2008

The exhibition "Brave new World – On the Transformation of Central and Eastern European Cities" is part of the project STADTanSICHTEN/ URBANreVIEWS, designed and carried out by the ifa-galleries Stuttgart and Berlin since 1993. After the last projects presenting cities in Asia and Africa, "Brave New World" deals with developments in the European region. At the same time, a change of perspective occurs: in contrast to the explosion of population in megacities like Cairo, Istanbul or Lagos, European cities are characterised by shrinking processes, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, but also in the East German states. The related negative consequences have already been discussed in detail. The exhibition "Brave New World" opposes this point of view through examples of creative re-use, artistic conversion and social re-dedication of former socialist cities, which now have to meet the requirements of the 21st century and its economical, political and social changes. The projects are various examples of urban planning, architectural and sociological transformations: they have to be pursued in a similar way in the entire region and occurred just because of the specific conditions featuring Central and Eastern Europe. "Brave New World" shows that there are re-uses and conversions worth appreciating.
