KOSTAS BASSANOS
Nowhere

15.01 – 21.02.2009

Kostas Bassanos’ fourth solo exhibition at Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Centre opens on Thursday 15th January 2009, at 19.30.The exhibition will run until 21st February 2009.

The artist presents a set of installations and large scale works within a formal and conceptual investigation in reference to romanticism as a utopian perception of reality and the elevation of the ephemeral as monumental. Taking the snapshot as duration and the fragment as a whole, the artist seeks a dynamic condensation of relationships, which is manifested in his work as the fold/unfold of collection or aggregation of materials and images.

On the ground floor of the gallery he presents From here to eternity -a large scale installation of cardboard plinths and slide projections of sunsets on a floor covered entirely with open cardboard boxes. In this work Kostas Bassanos uses folding as a spatial device where representation is folded/unfolded through the manipulation and the use of cardboard boxes as a metaphor where the social and the political are enveloped.

On the first floor, The Crows –an installation of casts in plaster of pallets’ parts painted in black ink dominates the space along with a large wall piece entitled Nowhere. In these works the artist deals with the notions of ruin as a cultural debris, and that of the fragment as a formal pattern that defines conceptually space. In others works, such as Sturm und Drang and 19:44 he revisits romanticism and proposes a hermetic reading of the sublime.

A limited edition of the book “19:44” figuring artist’s drawings published by the CUBEARTEDITIONS will be available at the opening.A catalogue with texts by art historians Kostas Ioannides and Elpida Karamba will be published by FUTURA.
