Marja Kanervo's works, which strongly appeal to a sense of presence and space, are frequently open events in their nature. The viewer is continuously able to perceive parts of a whole or the installation's form at a certain moment. The video projection documenting the creation process, Untitled, 2007 offers a new, more comprehensive perspective into Kanervo's art.
The video work begins with the planning phase of the work, erecting a ladder, and measuring the adjustment marks and co-ordinates. Gradually, the filming moves from the material level towards a more ethereal level. The aural texture and ornamentation of the choral work Miserere Mei Deus to the words of the Psalm "Be gracious unto me, O God, according to thy loving-kindness" leads towards a sublime experience of pure beauty. The artist is slowly covered in white dust from drilling and the brightness of the light.
In the last section, the camera focuses on the surface of a brick wall. Debris flies from the drill bit towards the viewer. The heavy breathing coming from behind a breathing mask and the beating of the heart highlight the physical nature of the work, "composition" as hard work.
The image moves from the white brick wall and along the letters chiselled into it, finally brightening into a final, white image. The words created on the wall remain partly a secret to the viewer, just like the work created on the wall of Tikkurila silk factory, which was destroyed when the premises were pulled down. All that remains is the image of the artist's unassuming approach and the process of breaking and pulling down. The words have a meaning and a relationship to the space. The works are created through the space.
We express ourselves through words over and over again, knowing at the same time, however, their vagueness and ability to deceive.
