CHRISTINE GALLATI UND CHRISTIAN OEHLER AUS DER SAMMLUNG DES GLARNER KUNSTVEREINS
Let's Take A Short Trip South
21 August – 30 October, 2011

In the two exhibition spaces on the lower floor selected works by two artists are on show: Christine Gallati (b1888 in Glarus, d1985 in Ennenda) and Christian Oehler (born in Stuttgart as the child of a woman from Glarus in 1909, d1986 in Netstal). Parts of both estates have found their way into the collection of the Glarner Kunstverein in recent years and are now to be made accessible to the public from the point of view of their travels together and the exchanges between these two creators of art.

In addition to numerous watercolours, lithographs and oil paintings with travel motifs by Christine Gallati and Christian Oehler, such as the repeated representation of port facilities and ships or portraits of people who seemed foreign at the time, in the exhibition there are also portraits of the two artists by each other and pictures from home, the Glarus Canton and Lassingen. The works demonstrate related characteristics: they always remain figurative but also have expressive features due to subjective empathy with the object as well as the notable choice of colours, particularly apparent in the lithographs. Materials from the archive and a series of interviews with friends and family members of both artists add to the exhibition in the form of documents, which make clear their frequent times lived together in the house in Lassingen, during journeys and in their exchanges on art.
