Cultural range and its physical manifestation in the form of buildings are the driving force and content of innovative city development and planning. The exhibition Culture:City curated by Matthias Sauerbruch devotes itself to this phenomenon, shedding light on the relations between architecture and daily reality – without, however, restricting itself to the paradigm of the ‘Bilbao effect’ nor losing sight of it.

Following its presentation at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, the exhibition will be shown at the Kunsthaus Graz, the latter located in a number of cultural buildings that also demonstrate the boom in recent decades in museums showcasing spectacular architecture.

The exhibition is conceived not only to offer the visitor a physical presentation of plans and models but also a special mode of analysis: virtual tours on iPads with commentary as well as in-depth background information. The individual architectural projects are complemented by auteur films of young graduates of the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (German film- and TV academy, Berlin).

Accompanying the exhibition and in collaboration with the Technische Universität Graz and the HDA (House of Architecture), there will be a series of talks and discussions on the role of cultural buildings, their needs and various development strategies.
