EDWARD STEICHEN
"In High Fashion"

11.10.2008 - 04.01.2009

Born in 1879 in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Edward Jean Steichen emigrated to America with his family in 1881. He took up photography and painting in his teens, and by the time of his death in 1973 he had established himself as one of the most influential photographers in the world. Steichen worked for the famous fashion magazines Vogue and Vanity Fair and photographed many famous celebrities and other leading figures of the day. After World War II he became director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where he curated the now-legendary exhibition The Family of Man in 1955.
The exhibition Edward Steichen: In High Fashion at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg features around 400 works by Steichen from all phases of his career. Some of the exhibits come directly from the archives of the Condé Nast publishing house and have never been on public display before. The exhibition has been organized in cooperation with the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography in Paris.
