A Selection of Works from Carl Andre to Sergej Jensen

The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg regularly presents its collection in changing configurations. As an alternative to the model of a permanent display, this approach enables viewers to discover new and often surprising connections between the works in the collection. This year’s summer exhibition unites works of Minimal art, Conceptual art and Arte Povera with recent contemporary artworks. Among the interesting juxtapositions featured are early works by Gilbert & George placed in relation to Cindy Sherman’s "Untitled Film Stills": both bodies of work involve an exploration of the self through existential questioning and the assumption of different roles. A correspondence can also be observed between Carl Andre’s large floor piece "Uncarved Blocks" and Jan Dibbets’ perspective photographs, while the juxtaposition of Gary Hume’s large-scale paintings on aluminium with recently acquired textile works by Sergej Jensen reveals an examination of modernist concepts of the image. The exhibition also provides an answer to the question of what artists do when they’re not making art, as Swiss duo Peter Fischli and David Weiss’s contribution to the 1995 Venice Biennale will be on show again for the first time in many years.
