Paulo Nazareth - Aqui é Arte
02 - 26 Jun 2016
Opening: Thursday, June 2, 7 pm at Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, Frankfurt.
The exhibition „Paulo Nazareth: Aqui é Arte“ is curated by Frankfurter Kunstverein and hosted by Mousonturm, as part of the festival “Projeto Brasil”.
Artist Paulo Nazareth (*1977, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) has made the act of walking the foundation of his artistic practice, he traverses continents on foot, crosses borders and passes through entire territories. His work is not based on the production of individual finished works but on fleeting, temporary traces: ephemeras, which take on the significance of an existential search for identity. Notes, photographs, videos, personal items or objects found along the way, leaflets and posters, with which he constructs different projects, experiences and encounters accumulated during his travels. In the words of the artist himself: “The possibility of life happening is wonderful. That interests me, the fragility of life, and the precariousness.”
The most celebrated episode in the artist’s career is his journey on foot from Brazil to New York, which he completed after two years with the washing of his feet in the Hudson River (Noticias de America, 2011-2012). Recent journeys took him to Africa and South America, where he produced his Cadernos de Africas. By walking through different cultural areas and across geographic borders, he collects stories about identity and belonging. As a Brazilian with indigenous, African and Italian roots, he deconstructs set exoticisms and stereotypes of the South.
The opening of the exhibition and launch of the festival “Projeto Brasil” on June 2, 2016 will be accompanied by Nazareth’s performative installation “Bureaux de Langue” in the entrance hall of Mousonturm at 7 pm.
The exhibition by Frankfurter Kunstverein will be presented at Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, Waldschmidtstr. 4, 60316 Frankfurt.
Opening Hours:
Tue – Fri: 5 – 10 pm
Sat: 2 – 10 pm
Sun: 2 – 8 pm
