WRITTEN ON THE WIND

The exhibition Written on the Wind, is an in depth survey of works on paper by artist Lawrence Weiner (New York, 1942). Weiner is one of the influential artists working in contemporary art today. His work spans from the early 1960s to today. His commitment to media in deseminating his work is shown in his range of production, from inscribed tangible objects to sound works to film. This exhibition will survey, for the first time, Weiner's drawing oeuvre, providing an intimate view of the artist's interests and obsessions, inceptions that show his view of the world and thus, the core of his work.
Language, the main component of Weiner's work, is particularly emphasized in Some Objects of Desire (2004), the large "mathematical equation" that has occupied the central wall of MACBA's atrium since 2009. One of Weiner's most emblematic works, it illustrates the artist's conviction that art is "an empirical reality based on the relations between human beings and objects and objects to objects in relation to human beings".
This new exhibition at MACBA will take visitors on a journey through Weiner's drawings that includes cartoons, notebooks and otherwise unknown material that, together with his more formal works on paper, comprise this exploration. Bringing together these facets from a career that spans more than fifty years, Written on the Wind will be narrated by gestural graphics, leading the viewer into the intellect of Weiner's oeuvre.
Over 300 drawings, notebooks, sketches and cartoons will be on loan from public institutions, galleries and private collections in the United States and Europe. MACBA will also publish a catalogue to complement the exhibition, the first comprehensive monograph devoted to Weiner's drawings.
The exhibition is organised by the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and co-produced with the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
