Maureen Paley is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Scottish born, New York-based artist Graham Durward who was featured in The Hidden at Maureen Paley in January 2008. He has recently been awarded an Abbey Fellowship in Painting from The British School at Rome which commences in April 2009. In 2007 Durward was selected by Matthew Higgs to show in a White Room at White Columns together with Donald Urquhart and Lars Laumann.
This exhibition will include new paintings depicting the smoke from burning incense in the artist’s studio together with a group of portraits. In his portraiture series faces are disfigured and obscured. These images are often sourced from the internet and mainly depict men who are disguising their own identity and putting themselves online for others to see. Durward employs a signature monochromatic palette in these works that engages the more abstract smoke imagery with the figurative canvases.
Graham Durward studied at Edinburgh College of Art and on the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. Previous solo exhibitions have included White Columns, New York in 2007 and Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York 1997, Patrick Callery, New York, 1994, Shedhalle, Zurich, 1993.
