21 FOR XXI. NEW ITALIAN CHURCHES
2 May – 2 June 2013

This exhibition presents the results of the sixth series of national competitions organized by the Italian Episcopal Conference, for the realization of new parish buildings.
The 21 design proposals from this edition, launched in 2011, concern the realization of three churches, one in the north (Ferrara), one in the centre (Olbia) and one in the south of Italy (Mormanno, Coscenza), formulated by seven design groups for each area.

Alongside the designs developed for this edition and the presentation of the three winners, the exhibition also illustrates the long and complex process that precedes and runs in parallel with the production of such projects, from the careful preparation of the competition announcement and the preliminary document through to the design phase, promoting moments of true dialogue, discussion and sharing among the various players in the construction process (clients and design teams composed of architects, liturgists and artists) during the development of the definitive project, a true “workshop of thought”.
Completing the materials on show are a number of photographs of the new churches from previous editions that have now been built, testifying to the efficacy and coherence of the entire process.

The competitions for the realisation of pilot projects for new churches in Italy are part of a broader cultural operation undertaken for some time by the Italian church to promote the quality of sacred architecture. On the basis of this virtuous process, the raising of the quality of religious building has to rely on the rediscovered dialogue between the church and the world of culture, starting out with architectural practice.
In this sense, therefore, the competition format, as well as trying to select the best project, proposes a truly new methodological process.

Winners

Benedetta Tagliabue, winner of the Northern Italy section
For the parish church of S. Giacomo Apostolo in Ferrara (Ferrara – Comacchio) Tagliabue has proposed a building with light, organic architecture that contrasts with the solid, compact materiality of the Ferrara’s historic constructions.

Francesca Leto, winner of the Central Italy section
For the parish church of S. Ignazio da Laconi in Olbia (Tempio Ampurias – Olbia) Leto has designed a building with a vertical configuration, its volume perfectly delineated, white, with no interruptions between roof and walls.

Mario Cucinella, winner of the Southern Italy section
For the church of S. Maria Goretti in Mormanno (Cassano all’Jonio – Cosenza) Cucinella has designed a solitary, unique and unrepeatable work, in which the entrance portal and the cross become essential elements inspired by the curves of Baroque architecture.
