In Workout seven Australian artists and collaborative groups were each given the run of the MCA’s Level 1 North Gallery for a day to present temporary works using the body and everyday materials. Drawing on the double meaning of ‘workout’ as a strenuous exercise routine and a test of performance capability, the exhibition reflected on artists’ approaches to physical activity, mental exertion, training and endurance. It also offered a platform for artists to ‘work out’ ideas in a public context, exploring this activity as part of the creative process.

Workout incorporated a set of guiding principles the artists responded to in their performances. The gallery began each day as a ‘white cube’. Interventions in the space were made by the artists and a small crew of MCA preparators and volunteers during Museum opening hours and removed in readiness for the next performance the following day.

Throughout Workout, Sydney-based artist Brian Fuata ‘read’ his co-participants activities from a designated space at the edge of the gallery; a process that culminated in his solo performance on the closing Sunday.

Museum visitors were encouraged to view the exhibition multiple times, to see the gallery transform and to participate in these experimental performances as they unfolded.
