Encrages
19 November, 2011 - 7 January, 2012

The Galerie Perrotin is pleased to announce the first major solo show by JR, «Encrages» from 19 November 2011 to 7 January 2012.
After displaying his work in the biggest Museum of the world, the walls of the cities, JR faces the walls of the Gallery.
JR creates monumental photographs that he pastes around the world, infiltrating in urban life anonymous portraits, witnesses of the present and the past :
«Women are Heroes» in Rio de Janeiro, Jaipur, Nairobi, etc. (2008-2010), which gave its title to JR’s movie that was selected at the Festival de Cannes in 2010; «The Wrinkles of the City» in Carthagena, Shanghai, Los Angeles etc. (2008-2011).
JR reveals art by action, displaying his gigantic prints over the suburban buildings of Paris, on walls in the Middle East or in the United States, on broken bridges in Africa or in favelas in Brazil.
He received the prestigious TED Prize in 2011 that offered him to make a «wish to change the world». With the Inside Out Project, JR brings together and prints portraits, as messages of personal identity
On this occasion, photobooths printing large-scale self-portraits were seen during the summer in various places of the globe, including Paris, (Centre Pompidou), Arles (Rencontres de la Photographie), Tel Aviv or Ramallah.
Never-seen before artwork and films will be shown, as well as a pasting on the facade of the Gallery.
Committed art, street art, participative art, ephemeral art... Beyond any category, JR makes us think by inviting on stage anonymous heroes, displaying the faces of humanity, multiple and one at the same time.
From 29 November to 10 December 2011, the Galerie Perrotin will organize an exhibition by JR «Wall & Paper» at The M Building in Miami

JR was born in France in 1983, works in Paris and New York. Winner of the TED Prize in 2011.
