What is a masterpiece? Is this notion still relevant today? Who decides what is a masterpiece? Once a masterpiece, always a masterpiece? The opening exhibition of the Centre Pompidou-Metz examines the notion of the masterpiece, past, present and future, through an exceptional selection of almost eight hundred works of art.

Thanks to the extraordinary richness and diversity of the collection of the Centre Pompidou, Musée national d’art moderne (which is the source of the majority of the artwork displayed in this exhibition), some of the greatest figures of 20th century art are on display in Metz. Come and discover or rediscover major works and experience unexpected "encounters with works of art". In addition, commissions have been especially undertaken for the occasion, along with loans from prestigious French and foreign institutions, creating an ensemble which is as novel as it is majestic. Paintings, sculptures, installations, graphic arts, photography, video, sound works, film, architecture, design, and more, every field of artistic creation is represented, reflecting the cross-disciplinary nature of Centre Pompidou-Metz’ programming.

Masterpieces? invites you to partake in a journey in four parts.
