A retrospective exhibition for one of Britain’s most respected abstract sculptors.

John Carter RA is one of Britain’s most respected abstract sculptors. His art has been described as a dialogue between painting and sculpture. This retrospective exhibition focuses on Carter’s use of drawing, and other works on paper, to develop ideas for his relief sculptures and constructions.

Ranging in date from 1965 to 2012, the selection reveals Carter’s development from early Op and Pop Art influences to the rigorously ordered structures of his current work. Maquettes, sketchbooks and working studies are shown alongside the drawings.

Born in 1942, Carter emerged as one of the ‘New Generation’ artists of the 1960s. He has exhibited widely in Europe, Japan and the USA, and taught at the Chelsea College of Art and Design from 1980 until 2000. He was elected a Royal Academician in 2007.
