ERIKA EDE
Piel de Lluvia (The Skin of the Rain)
13 January - 15 February 2015

Sala Rekalde presents Piel de Lluvia (The Skin of the Rain), an exhibition by Erika Ede (Bilbao, 1961), included in the barriek 2015 programme, whose purpose is to display work by artists who have been awarded Grants for Artistic Creation by the Regional Council of Bizkaia.

This show is about the sea, but which sea? The sea that erodes, the sea of marine geology or the sea of Odysseus peopled by men and adventures. Is there just one, or are there many? This is a question that the atlases answer in chorus. This presentation will also be choral, where in each image and each text we feel the sway of the tide of feelings and experiences against the sea facing them. This exhibition deals with their silence or their signals. Silence and signals of the sea.
Jose Ignacio de Aguísola

The exhibition, titled Piel de Lluvia, (The Skin of the Rain) presents a series of photographs which, along with texts by José Ignacio de Anguísola, have as a "leitmotif" family memory. Through the recovery of a landscape and of places where the family has lived, the artist documents her world, sometimes combining past photographs with present photographs, as well as using other writers, literature or correspondence.Using the sea as a reference, Erika Ede enters the world of her ancestors and her own past.

To that sea to which she travels and whose frozen surface again feels the affect of a camera shutter, or to the other sea nearer to home, the sea of Biscay, where her gaze is superimposed this time on an old photograph by her grandfather. This is a personal approach by the artist based on family experience, linking her at different times in her life to the Baltic and the Biscay coasts. In this project there is a process of re-cataloging the places which, already present in past photographs, oil paintings or in memories of anecdotes, begin with a detailed location of the coast, starting from Laga Beach in Biscay, and flying across Europe, reaching the coast from the delta of the Daugava river in Riga and continuing all the way to Cape Mērsrags.
